Ghanaian Health Workers

Ghanaian health workers include primarily doctors, midwives, nurses, radiologists, laboratory technicians etc. I have been in this country all my life and unfortunately Health workers are one of the groups that I dislike most. No matter how I try to like them they keep on doing the same things in exponential proportions that always amaze me.
Its always a wonder how some health workers make the the very idea that governs their profession break down time and time again.Health workers are to show the highest levels of care and concern but what do we see.... apathy to say the least. Sometimes you go to hospital and you begin to ask yourself why you did not stay in the house and pray for God's healing touch. I had not visited any public hospital for sometime until today. My uncle's two (2) year old son fell sick after he returned from school around 4:00pm so I was called to drive them to the hospital. We went straight to the Kwesimintm Hospital in Takoradi. A medical assistant was in charge there. After waiting for about an hour to enter the consulting room my uncle emerged from the main building and came to me in the car, he then pointed to a certain woman who had been sitting on a bench just in front of me in the car as the one they were waiting for. The woman had been sitting there for about 20 minutes. I asked my uncle why the woman is sitting outside while patients were in a queue waiting for her. My uncle said before the woman came out she said in the waiting area that she does not like people who try to avoid long queues and come during that time of the day so she is going to waste their time a little bit.

Dear readers I hope you get the picture, the medical assistant said she is wasting patients' time because she does not like the idea that they try to avoid long queues in the morning and come to the hospital in the late hours of the day.
This is outrageous. How can a professional think like that let alone say it out loud. Ludicrous!!!!

I remember very well that sometime ago I went the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital and what I witnessed was simply magical. The doctor in charge immediately begun to write on the prescription form after he asked what was wrong with me. By the time I finished narrating my problem he had also finished writing the drug that would cure me. All said to myself was Magical!!!. Its like the fetish priests we normally see in African movies. They know the problems of their visitors before they even say it.

Nurses on the hand have their fair share of the issues. Sometimes the way they talk to patients is very disturbing. Especially when patients know they are suffering a lot, these nursing usually take time and walk up and down just because they think they have seen all kinds of sickness before. They forget that it does not matter what they have seen before its always someone suffering.

Deaths are recorded in the big hospitals than the smaller ones because the apathy is greater in the big places than the small ones.

All in all I think our health workers need to improve their overall work ethic. The country pays them big bucks to that. I know it does not make any difference whether I like them or not but its peoples life we are talking about here.
